| An Abingdon, Va., man has adorned his yard with colorful art pieces composed of found objects
ABINGDON, Va. – Yes, it comes from the junk yard and grows overnight – and yes, it’s art. Ollie Cox’s yard may be the most colorful in town, but he says in the western U.S., houses surrounded by painted sculptures are more common than folks in this region might think. "You drive down Interstate 40, you get into Arizona ... and there’s these dinosaurs in the middle of the desert and this UFO-looking house sitting there," Cox said. In California, "You drive down the street, and you just laugh constantly, at full tilt." Viewed in this context, he says his yard – with 10-foot totems, 6-foot-tall paintings on found objects and assorted spaceships – is relatively tame. "Do you see any trees? Any cacti? Any palms?" he asked.
Flyers fighting 'uphill battle' to repeat as division champs
To repeat as Southwest Division champions will be no easy task for the Lindbergh hockey team, but they've called in a big gun to help. With head coach John Murray entering his fifth season at the helm of the Flyers program, he will have a new assistant coach on the bench.Arne Pappin brings with him a strong hockey resume and joins Steve Ems as Murray's assistant coaches in what Murray called "an uphill battle" to repeat. The Flyers will be without the services of last season's goalie, Danny Moyne, who had to leave Lindbergh because his father was transferred to Dallas."It's gonna be an uphill battle for us. Last year we had the benefit of an outstanding freshman goalie in Danny Boyne," Murray said. "I thought he was the best goalie in St. Louis last year."Replacing Moyne will be senior Kevin Kaiser and junior Rien Duggar."We're not looking for spectacular goaltending, but just solid goaltending," Murray said.

Lowe will return to court Saturday
After missing two road games for what Boston University men's basketball coach Dennis Wolff termed "personal reasons," sophomore guard Corey Lowe will return to practice today and play against Manhattan College on Saturday. Neither Lowe nor Wolff disclosed the details of the situation, but both mentioned it was a combination of factors involving family and medical issues. "I never wanted to leave. I just had to get my things together," Lowe said. "There were a lot of things that accumulated." In a meeting between the two yesterday afternoon, both agreed it would be best for Lowe to return to action Saturday. "Talking to Corey [yesterday], he was in a much better place," Wolff said. "I think he's going to come back refreshed and have a better handle on dealing with some of the things he's had to deal with." Without last year's leading scorer (14.1 points per game) in the lineup, the Terriers (1-5) lost both games of their recent road trip by a combined 50 points.
Police detail diversion scam
Police are warning residents to be on the alert for a scam that often targets older women who live alone. On Oct. 30, a woman on South Limekiln Pike was outside doing yard work when a couple, believed to be Hispanic and in their 20s or 30s, approached her, asking to see her property line. They reportedly told the woman they were planning to take down some trees for a neighboring homeowner and wanted to be sure they didn't disturb her trees. As she showed one of them around, the other entered her house and stole about $2,000 in cash and several thousand dollars worth of jewelry. Some $1,500 was in coins kept in a very large container. Before burglarizing the home, police said the pair tried the same scheme on a woman on Route 152. She refused to go outside and the couple left, police said.
