| Tanning Bed Article Lacks Canerous Truth
When reading Christine White's Nov. 29 tanning bed article in Tuesday's paper, I practically peed myself with anger. I found it extremely amazing that I could read about the "Pros and Cons" of tanning beds and not come across the words "skin cancer." Those friendly bulbs that supposedly free you from depression and give you stronger bones also can give you other neat things such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Guess what? All three can kill you. If you have any history of skin cancer in your family, tanning beds are just about the worst thing for your skin other than coating your body in Crisco before heading to the beach. So next time you are, like, totally wanting to go to a tanning salon, think about the consequences.

A film student from Brantford learned a tough real world lesson Thursday after her plans for shooting a black comedy about a fictional illness dubbed tanorexia at a local tanning salon provoked an unexpectedly angry and far-reaching response from members of the tanning industry. Sarah Evans, a fourth-year York University film major, had arranged to shoot portions of her short comedy at Stand 'N Tan on Fairview Drive with the permission of salon owner Michelle O'Brien. A profile of the budding filmmaker and her project was featured in Thursday's Expositor. However, film plans were scrapped by mutual agreement after O'Brien received a flurry of angry and concerned telephone calls from other local tanning operators and even from the B.C.-based Joint Canadian Tanning Association.
In the Garden: Spectacular new roses promised for the coming year
When I opened up my latest issue of the American Rose Magazine, I went crazy. Here we are, facing another long and dreary winter, and what does the magazine have dead center in its publication? There are 47 new roses with full color pictures and incredible descriptions that are coming out for 2008. Talk about a tease! I am overwhelmed with the beauty and descriptions of all the new roses. I dont believe I have witnessed so many impressive roses at one time coming to market. It made me depressed to think that I still have until February to plant any of them, and then I have to wait until June to see them in all their glory! The work that rose hybridizers like Tom Carruth of Weeks Roses and Keith Zary of Jackson and Perkins are performing is astounding. Ping Lim of Bailey Nurseries, Inc., focuses on disease resistance and cold hardiness in roses.
