Discovery channel made a selection of five famous shipwrecks, listing them in a chronological order, as follows: Mary Rose,Titanic , Lusitania , Bismarck, Belgrano. Titanic The White Star liner Titanic sank, after collision with an iceberg, on 15 April 1912. She had been built by Harland and Wolff, and was registered at 46,328 gross tons. The Titanic boasted a gymnasium, swimming pools, a squash court and Turkish baths. At 11.40pm on 14 April 1912, the Titanic’s lookout rang the bell three times and said, "Iceberg right ahead". Sadly all subsequent efforts to avoid collision came too late and a rock-hard spur of ice ripped into the ship like a giant tin opener, puncturing 250ft of the ship’s hull. With too few lifeboats on board for the number of passengers, panic started to set in.
Funeral in Sachs Harbour remembers longtime elder, crafter
People in the Arctic hamlet of Sachs Harbour, N.W.T., remembered one of its oldest elders at a funeral Wednesday afternoon. Sarah Kuptana, who was in her early 90s, died last week in Inuvik. She is survived by three children. Sachs Harbour is on the southern coast of Banks Island, in the Northwest Territories.(CBC) Born and raised in an igloo on Victoria Island, Kuptana grew up travelling on the island. She raised some of her own children in an igloo as well. But while she was in her 20s, Kuptana contracted tuberculosis. Her sister, Leena Wolki, told CBC News that Kuptana spent part of the 1930s in an Edmonton hospital. "She laid in bed for five years and they never thought she's going to make it," Wolki said Wednesday. "Then she started praying.
Tuna industry to benefit from Jpepa
RATIFICATION by the Senate of the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (Jpepa) gained the support of local tuna industry leaders in General Santos City. Marfenio Tan, president of the Socsksargen Federation of Fishing and Allied Industries, Inc., said the tuna industry as well as other maritime products will benefit from the bilateral trade agreement. View the Batasan blast message board But Tan raised two major points that shall move the Senate to approve the trade deal signed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in Helsinki , Finland in September 2006. "First, it [Jpepa] should lead to the lifting of the ban on smoked tuna products to Japan . Secondly, it should be ensured that the Philippines would not be a dumping ground of toxic wastes from Japan ," he said in a telephone interview.
