New bus stops cater to wheelchair users
KUALA LUMPUR: Some people find that the recently built bus stops and taxi stands around the city centre are uncomfortable and lacking in seating space. To the disabled on wheelchairs, however, the shelters are quite friendly. The designer for the minimalist bus and taxi stands, Parisign, hired by City Hall, explained that the design was meant to create ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing shelters. Parisign general manager Henry Tan said the gaps in between the panels were sized to allow for wheelchairs to be comfortably slotted in so that the pathway would be clear. He said Parisign had discussions with a variety of associations which dealt with the disabled to find out what their needs were. They are currently in the process of testing a prototype conveyor lift for the handicapped to solve the current problem faced by authorities to raise the pedestrian walkway by 0.3 metres for the new Rapid KL busses.
