(AFX UK Focus) 2007-11-01 18:26 GMT: Md.: Governor's tax plan protested

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Real estate agents and fitness club owners rallied Thursday against Gov. Martin O'Malley's plan to extend the sales tax to include their services.

O'Malley wants to raise the sales tax from 5 to 6 percent and extend it to additional services, including real estate management, health club memberships and tanning salons.

Real estate agents argue that the tax shouldn't be applied to them, because housing is a basic commodity like food. The tax will end up raising monthly or annual fees for people who own condominiums or belong to homeowner associations, said Carole Maclure, president of the Maryland Association of Realtors. She also said tenants will pay higher rent, because property managers will pass expenses on to them.

Real estate agents and other opponents chanted "no real estate tax" at a rally in front of the State House, as lawmakers gathered for the third day of hearings of a special session called by O'Malley to address a $1.7 billion budget deficit.
