27/11: ISA may be used on illegal demonstrators, says Johari

The government has not ruled out the possibility of using the Internal Security Act (ISA) on those involved in illegal demonstrations and gatherings. Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Mohd Johari Baharum said the government may have to look into the use of detention without trial provisions in the future if such illegal demonstrations continue to mushroom. "If the situation warrants it, (we will use the ISA)," he told reporters in Parliament lobby yesterday. The ISA, a colonial piece of legislation that was enforced to deal with the communists during Malaya's emergency, allows for indefinite detention without trial. Johari said the government may have to consider using the ISA following the Hindraf demonstration yesterday and the Bersih demonstration two weeks ago which have raised concerns about public safety, security and economic losses.

Elbowing and last-second timeouts need to be abolished

Last week I was about to tell Completely Clueless Man on the airplane that there was no need to yell into his cell phone.

The party to whom he was speaking was in the same zip code as the airport, not in Europe or Kazakhstan -- which would clearly require speaking at a level to alert everyone else on the plane with the vital information that Clueless Man "just landed" and would be "getting off the plane soon."

I don't know how we, as a culture and a significant people-group, survived in such situations before cell phones.

I guess we just had to wait to share such exciting news until after departing the plane, perhaps even to someone who cared.

Anyway, as I was saying, I was just about to share my cell phone etiquette insights with this individual when at the last possible second, my wife called a social timeout by elbowing me in the ribs -- ribs that I might point out were just beginning to heal from prior timeouts.
